Zinc lozenges have been shown to reduce the duration of the most frequently occurring human illness in the world, the common cold. What is Natures Aid Zinc Lozenges used for?

• Common Cold - a reduction in duration of the common cold has been observed in several clinical trials when zinc lozenges are sucked at regular intervals. Typically in the trials, the duration of the illness was reduced from 8 days to 4. Although there does not appear to be any benefit from sucking zinc lozenges to prevent colds, they are effective when taken as soon as the symptoms appear. One trial reported a 42% reduction in the duration of colds when treatment was begun during the first day of symptoms. Those reduced, included coughing, headache, hoarseness, muscle ache, running or congested nose, itching or sore throat, sneezing, or a temperature greater than 37.7°C.
• Studies have shown that vitamin C levels become depleted during the course of infection. Vitamin C supplements are known to reduce the duration of colds.

Other Information:

Zinc - the ability of zinc lozenges to shorten colds appears to be due to zinc ions having a localised anti-viral action in the throat. Zinc gluconate has been successful in trials, but most other forms have not. The mechanism by which they work is not fully understood although several possibilities have been suggested. Zinc has been shown in experiments to prevent certain viruses multiplying, possibly by preventing the formation of the proteins they require to make their outer shell.

Vitamin C - helps to develop and maintain a healthy immune system. Vitamin C is the most important water soluble biological anti-oxidant.
